Idea Featured Resource

This month’s featured resource from the MiALA IDEA Resources for Education and Training list is:

South Asian American digital archive (SAADA). https://www.saada.org

Description: This project documents the South Asian American experience and centers it within American history. The archive, storytelling projects, exhibits, artistic partnerships, walking tours, lesson plans, and books reflect a community of more than 6.1 million individuals and more than 250 years of history.

As part of the IDEA Committee's continued effort to build a concise, streamlined list of recent articles, books, reports, training resources and toolkits, websites, videos, terminology resources, and online communities related to IDEA, MiALA members are invited to suggest resources. Make your suggestion using our suggestion form.

Message from the President

Hi all,

We are only a few weeks away from this year’s MiALA academic conference; it’s an exciting time. Being able to gather together should not be taken lightly, given it’s only been several years since we were hosting our annual conference online. Which by the way is an amazing achievement by our colleagues who were in the trenches from 2020-2022. So once again let’s welcome time to gather, share insights and ideas, and appreciate our time together in person.

This year’s conference planners have done an outstanding job threading poster presentations, Breakout sessions, workshops and much more so please take some time to rub elbows with your colleagues and enjoy our time together.

And finally I’ll point out one program you could attend if you have time in your busy schedule. The MiALA Strategic Planning Team will be holding their MiALA Strategic Plan Launch. This will be a chance to learn how you can participate in forwarding MiALA’s new strategic plan. This team has pulled out all the stops and has provided a plan that can navigate MiALA in new challenging ways and opportunities.

One last thought, the call for nominations is now open. Consider volunteering and serving your MiALA colleagues. Serving on the Board or a Committee is an excellent way to not only meet your fellow MiALA members, it is also a great way to share and learn new skills. Now is a perfect time to jump in with both feet and help navigate MiALA.

Stay connected, stay engaged!

Mies Martin
2024-205 MiALA President

Nominations for Board and IGCC Positions Now Open!

MiALA is now accepting nominations for open Board and IGCC positions. Leadership takes many forms in MiALA and there are many service opportunities available.

Why serve in a leadership role in MiALA? Because service with MiALA:

  • Can count toward professional service, tenure, or continuing appointment requirements at your institution;

  • Establishes an active professional network with colleagues from other institutions;

  • Promotes academic librarianship through collaboration and communication.

We encourage self-nominations and nominations of those who you think would serve MiALA well! Newly-elected positions will begin service on July 1, 2025.

2025 Open Positions:

  • Vice President/President-Elect (three year term)

  • Secretary (two year term)

  • Publicly Funded University Representative (two year term)

  • Private College Representative (two year term)

  • Community College Representative (two year term and one one-year partial term)

  • Interest Group Coordination Council Representatives (two two-year terms) and Members-At-Large (Two one-year terms)

Hear from someone who has served:

“Serving as Vice-President, President, and Past-President of MiALA was a very enriching experience for me personally. I got to see first-hand the experience, skills, and expertise that all of our colleagues bring to the organization. And as a Board member you get a chance to contribute your own time and experience alongside these great colleagues, interest groups, and committees.” - Carin Graves, MSU

Nominations will be accepted through Tuesday, May 27th.  If you are interested in running, or in nominating a colleague, please submit the nomination form on the Election Central 2025 website: http://miala.org/election_central.php.

If you have any questions, please visit the MiALA Bylaws and MiALA Policies and Procedures Manual for more information about positions and expectations, or contact the Nominating Committee at elections@miala.org.
