2025-26 Election Season Starts Soon!

With Spring comes warmer weather, flowers, and MiALA elections! The Nominations and Election committee will soon be soliciting candidates for President-Elect, Secretary, Board Representatives, and Interest Group Coordination Council Member At Large.

If you’re hesitant to toss your name in the hat because you lack years of leadership experience, MiALA’s rotating structure assures that there are always experienced Board members to guide you. What better way to learn more about MiALA than from the inside! Much of the foundation being laid by MiALA’s strategic plan will be implemented by next year’s Board, providing an exciting and worthwhile opportunity to guide MiALA’s growth in an executive role.

Watch for deadlines and details about the nomination and election process. In the interim feel free to contact committee Chair Darlene Johnson-Bignotti: dxjohnso@oaklandcc.edu.

Message from the President

Hi all,

We are excited to announce that registration for the 2025 Academic Conference is now open! Don't miss this opportunity to secure your spot. We encourage members to register early to guarantee your attendance in Flint.

Just a reminder nomination for the Academic Librarian of the Year award will open on April 25th. This is your chance to recognize outstanding contributions in our field. Stay tuned for nomination details and criteria. You can find additional information here.

Our association has joined MLA, LCM, MASL, MMA MAA and the Historical Society of Michigan in signing a critical joint statement opposing federal cuts to the Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS). These cuts threaten vital services like MeL, MelCat, and essential databases. While the challenges are significant, we remain hopeful. There is still a potential pathway for Congress to reauthorize IMLS.

As we celebrate MelCat's 20th anniversary, we invite members to share their stories and experiences with the Library of Michigan. Your narratives can help demonstrate the program's incredible impact. You can share your story here.

We are thrilled to reveal that Traverse City will host our 2026 Annual Conference. Thad Dickinson from Central Michigan and Christina Radisauskas from Aquinas College have graciously agreed to serve as conference co-chairs, promising an exceptional event for our membership.

Stay connected, stay engaged!

Mies Martin

2024-2025 MiALA President

Casual Conversation: Self-Care for Librarians

The Instruction & Info Lit Interest Group invites all to attend our April Casual Conversation, Tuesday, April 29, 10:00A on Zoom.

Librarians often balance supporting students and instructors while managing personal and professional stress. How can we integrate self-care into our routines to foster resilience and balance? Led by Dylan McGlothlin, this conversation will focus on protecting our time and energy, navigating personal connections to difficult topics, and prioritizing self-compassion in our daily work.

Please register for the Zoom link and calendar invite.

The winner will be announced at the Annual Conference in May, and will be recognized at the Michigan Library Awards ceremony (date and location TBD). In addition, the winner will receive a cash prize of $250, a statuette, and complementary registration to the 2026 MiALA Annual Conference.

Click here or follow the link under the News and Events heading on the MiALA homepage for more information, guidelines, and a link to the nomination form. Deadline for submissions is Friday, April 25!
